As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, it’s time to ditch the green beer and opt for something different this year. Sure, green beer has its place in the hall of fame for St. Patrick’s Day traditions, but let’s shake things up a bit this year. Let us put you on to some cocktails that will have you feeling really lucky.
Before we dive into our favorite St. Patrick’s Day cocktails, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of what St. Patrick’s Day is all about.
This beloved holiday traces back to the early 17th century when the feast day of St. Patrick was first celebrated in Ireland. Over the years, the holiday evolved into a lively celebration of Irish culture, complete with parades, music, and dancing. In addition, St. Patrick’s Day is a time for indulging in traditional Irish cuisine. Popular dishes include Irish stew, corned beef and cabbage, and soda bread. Many people also enjoy Irish beverages such as stout and whiskey.
One drink that had a rapid rise in popularity: green beer.
Legend has it, the tradition of green beer began in the early 20th-century when a bartender in New York City accidentally added blue food coloring to beer, turning it green. This happy accident quickly gained popularity, and as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations became more widespread and commercialized, the tradition of serving green beer caught on for each year. Bars and pubs began adding green food coloring to beer as a way to join in the festivities and attract patrons looking for a unique way to celebrate.
While green beer adds a colorful and festive twist to a classic drink, let’s not forget that there are other (and arguably better) ways to toast to the occasion. Without further ado, here are three cocktails we think you should try to make your St. Patrick’s Day 2024 celebration better than finding a pot of gold.
